about

The power of beer! Slumming around the web a few GLB Canuck Pale Ales in, BassKase stumble across SCTV’s Happy Hour skits. For the uninitiated, this was a bit about an after-school show hosted by Happy Marsden and his puppet pal, Sammy The Goose. It was set in a dive bar run by the largely disinterested Bartender Mike. True to genre form, they would cut away to a faux 40’s serial Western starring Don Mills (also the name of a Toronto suburb…) and his sidekick Cheaplaffs.

Being a few beers in and reaching for more, he thought “what would these characters be up to 20 years later?” This is what he came up with…

Happy Marsden – Happy was happy being Happy and still is. A committed barfly, he’s content with his next highball sliding his way down the bar.

Sammy The Goose – Sammy always was an enigma. No lines, only clacking his beak. Shitty costume. No respect. He’s still doing a slow burn. Sammy’s mad as hell and he wants some get-back…

Don Mills – In an old home with a singular dream. Saddle up and ride once more into the sunset.

Bartender Mike – Mike’s a simple man. Same bar, same crap TV. After all those years of adjusting rabbit ears to tune in Jazzercise from a local station, all he wants is frickin’ cable. His dream is finally realized!

Cheaplaffs – He played the comic relief role for years and was typecast as a dusty rube. No one knew he had sophisticated tastes. Now unencumbered by the persona, he’s diving deep. Real deep.

What better way to salute a satirical program than with a satirical tribute and kicking tracks?
