Among the many things trying during the months of lockdown has been the loss of some fav watering holes – an especially hard hit in a great bar city like Chicago. Reflecting on a memorable (well, as well as one remembers these things on such nights…) evening in the venerable and recently-defunct Danny’s Tavern, BassKase recalled getting in deep discussion with manager Kevin Stacy who was spinning Booker T’s “McLemore Avenue” – a complete album of “Abbey Road” instrumentals. This led to tracks by Lou Donaldson, Charles Earland, Brother Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith and many others. After closing down Danny’s, the (bad) decision was made to head off to a nearby late-night spot called The Riptide, now long shuttered … Also gone over the years: Artful Dodger, Augenblick, Bucket o’ Suds, Blue Note, Great Beer Palace, Get Me High Lounge, Holiday Club, Lounge Ax, Lava Lounge, Lucky Number, Red Bird Flap Inn, Sam’s Working Man’s Palace, et al.
Reflecting on that evening, BassKase went on a mining expedition. Pulling out live performances from archived tracks and reframing them in a rare groove, soul jazz vibe. Lots of off-the-floor performances feature Hammond organ, Rhodes electric piano, congas, percussion and bass, back-up by a loungy beatbox.
